Andy Yarrow’s team visit Upper Clapton this weekend in cruch Essex One clash

May & Baker captain Andy Yarrow believes a win over Upper Clapton on Saturday will virtually confirm them as Essex One champions.

Yarrow’s team travel to face a Clapton side, who are coached by Dean Cutting – former Bakers coach.

That adds some needle to the occasion, but the position of both sides makes the clash even more important.

Bakers are top of the table, leading Clapton by seven points, and success this weekend would give them an unassailable lead, according to captain Yarrow.

“Although it won’t be mathematically done, if we win this weekend at Upper Clapton it will be job done for me as far as the league is concerned because I’m sure we won’t slip up in other matches,” he said.

“They have recruited well and spent a little bit of money and I can’t tell you how buzzing and excited we are for this game.”

The fixture at Upland Road is the only clash going ahead in the Essex One on Saturday, with the other teams able to enjoy a free weekend.

Yarrow believes that will make for a good crowd and he has called on his team to replicate their recent display in the Vase at Camberley.

Bakers were beaten 22-20 by the Surrey One outfit on February 28, but it was their “best performance of the season” according to Yarrow and only a poor penalty count cost them on that occasion.

“If we play like we did at Camberley two weeks ago and make sure the penalty count is good then there is no reason why we can’t win at Upper Clapton,” insisted Yarrow.

“They are always well supported and I would expect people from other teams to come and watch. Any of our lot that aren’t playing or at the Six Nations will come too.

“It is going to be a great watch for the neutral rugby person, but we are switched on and focused. Losing is not an option in my opinion.”

Yarrow is confident his team can triumph this weekend because they can do both parts of the game well.

He added: “It is the best attack in the league, Upper Clapton, versus the best defence, which is us. It will be close, but they are not that strong at the back and we know we can score tries and that gives us huge confidence.”

Bakers warmed up for Saturday’s game by beating Canvey Island 36-0.

Yarrow, Tony Bly and Tommy Stimson all helped themselves to braces as Bakers earned a 16th consecutive league success of the season.

“We played quite well in parts, but not for the full 80 minutes,” he said.

“They didn’t look like scoring and we pride ourselves on our defence, but we weren’t as ruthless as we could have been in attack.

“I don’t think I have ever been able to say in all my life that I have scored two tries in a week.

“I can’t take the credit though, the forward pack is so strong they have made it easy for me.”
