London One North: Barking 64 Ipswich 14

Barking head coach Steve Wagstaff was glad to see his side come up trumps against Ipswich at the weekend.

The Goresbrook outfit ran in 10 tries on their way to a comfortable victory as they put the division’s newcomers to the sword.

And Wagstaff admitted the atmosphere had been just right in the build-up to the game.

He said: “We had a couple of good training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday and that put us in a good frame of mind.

“We looked over a few videos during the week and the boys executed the plan really well and the performance was very good.

“It built on two solid weeks, and though we hadn’t picked up the results in those two games it had certainly laid the foundations.”

Barking shared around the tries at Gale Street with doubles from Tom Bateman, Sam Randle, Shaun Turner and Elliot Brown, while Ryan Keates and Ben Lloyd also went over.

Player-coach Lloyd added seven conversions for a 19-point haul in the win, and though Wagstaff believed there wasn’t a bad performance in sight, he had special praise for Steve Hayes.

“Ben told the Post last week we were just inches away from clicking and we did just that at the weekend,” he added.

“Nobody really put in a bad performance, but Steve Hayes deserves a lot of plaudits.

“He’s not a star man going forward, but he certainly put a lot of work in. He did all the dirty work really well and he was my man of the match.

“But credit must go to all of the boys as they all delivered.”
