Ilford Wanderers romped to a 77-7 win over neighbouring Dagenham in their latest Essex Division One B outing at the weekend.

The visitors produced a performance of power, pace and dexterity to put their local rivals to the sword and keep the pressure on title rivals Kings Cross Steelers.

Ilford touched down twice inside the first 10 minutes and never looked back as they kept the scoreboard ticking over.

After winning a scrum against the head, they saw number eight Reece Barney crash over to claim the first try of the game.

And more success in a scrum on halfway set up a blindside move for Carl Anka to race clear and score.

Dagenham hit back with a well-taken try as the home side’s full-back cut through Ilford’s defence, before the visitors were held up over the line at the other end.

Ilford centre Tom Clancy was then stopped just short, but popped a pass to flanker Lawrence Brown to score, and Dave Humphreys also went over before Barney touched down from a five-metre scrum to make it 29-7.

Dagenham’s young backs posed questions for the Ilford defence, but could not find a way through before half time.

Instead, Ilford’s Barney completed his hat-trick after the restart from a scrum and veteran centre Graham Bailey powered over from an attacking move on the left.

Lock Lee Martin claimed his third try in as many matches from a five-metre line-out and captain Jason Taylor opened his account after some fine work by the forwards to make it 51-7.

Taylor followed up with two more tries for a quickfire treble, after good approach work by Clancy and Waddens and a crossfield move put Humphreys over again.

A poor Dagenham kick was then collected by James Martin, who ran back towards the line and put Bailey over to complete the scoring.

Ilford’s delighted captain Taylor said: “Dagenham have some good young players and will be a handful in two or three years, but today was about working on our processes and building towards our clash with Steelers in a couple of weeks.”
