Gale Street club venture south of the river for Saturday’s clash

Forwards coach Andrew Moreland says it is important Barking continue to stick together as they carry on in their quest for a first London Two South East win of the season.

The Gale Street club head south of the river this weekend when they make the trip to Old Alleynians on Saturday.

Last weekend, Barking were beaten 82-22 at home to Old Alleynians as they remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Despite the defeat, the match saw the Gale Street side score their most points in a game this season.

And it is plus points such as those that Moreland is keen to draw on as Barking bid to end their winless run.

“It’s been hard this season, but we know we have to look at the positives from each game,” said Moreland.

“Against Haywards Heath on Saturday, the team spirit was the highest it has been for a while.

“We also had some of the vets team back to play, and they know what it’s like to play for Barking and can help some of the newer players.

“We need to continue to stick together, keep working hard in training and start to get rid of the negatives from our displays.”

With Barking having been placed in the South East division following relegation last year, many of the teams they will face this term will be something of an unknown.

Old Alleynians are the latest in that line, but Moreland has been doing his research into what the Gale Street club can expect on their journey south of the river.

“We’ve looked at Old Alleynians games this season and most of them have been quite close in terms of the final score,” added the Barking forwards coach.

“There have been some surprising results, though, when they have lost to sides you would have expected them to beat.

“Old Alleynians are based not too far away from Dulwich College, so I expect there are a few players in their squad who went to school there.

“They should be quite knowledgeable about the game as Dulwich is a good rugby college, and we also expect Old Alleynians to be fit, so it should be a physical encounter.”

Barking’s Gale Street base will host the third and final Test between the England deaf team and their New Zealand rivals on Sunday, with free entry to the match.
