Current campaign far from over, but Gale Street club laying foundations for following term
Barking head coach Ollie Smith says he is planning for next season with the club 17 points adrift of safety at the bottom of London One North.
The Gale Street outfit host Old Priorians on Saturday on the back of a 25-17 loss at home to Sudbury last weekend.
It was a loss that kept Barking rooted to the bottom of the table, and Smith admits he is already starting to think about how to rebuild the club next season.
“It might sound harsh, but the reality is we have to look at who really wants to play for the club,” he said.
“The club have had a bad few years and at the moment this season looks no different, but the future can still be bright.
“There are some great people behind the scenes who are working hard and are desperate to help Barking move forward.
“I said to the players before the Sudbury game they had to ask themselves what they want from playing rugby and I’ll do so again at the end of the season.”
As for Priorians, Smith still believes his side can pull off a victory, even if Barking have lost their last 12 matches.
He added: “This group has the quality to beat most sides in the league, as long as we train regularly. We’ll be far better for it as they will improve at the basics of the game.”
