Dwight Gayle was praised by manager John Still after netting his first goal for Dagenham & Redbridge in Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Gillingham

Dwight Gayle notched his first goal for Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday and manager John Still hopes it will be the first of many for his exciting young forward.

The 21-year-old striker scored from the penalty spot in Daggers’ 2-1 defeat to Gillingham and was mobbed by his team-mates.

And now that Gayle has opened his account Still believes the ex-Arsenal trainee can enjoy a prolific season in League Two.

“I’m pleased for Dwight,” said Still.

“He’s had a few chances in games, so I’m glad he scored.

“It’s his first league goal – let’s hope it leads to others.”

Gale did, however, finish on the losing side after Deon Burton and Myles Weston netted for Gillingham in each half.

And Still was disappointed with the way his side defended the winning goal in an otherwise accomplished performance.

“We should have done better with the (second) goal,” he said. “Mickey (Spillane) has to defend that a bit stronger, but having said that the back four played really well.”
