Wheelchair tennis star will take part in festival to help inspire next generation of talent

Rio 2016 Paralympic silver and bronze medallist Andy Lapthorne will aim to inspire the wheelchair tennis stars of the future when he attends the Push2Podium wheelchair tennis talent ID festival at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.

From 11-4pm on September 25, Lapthorne will be attending the free wheelchair tennis festival to show off his medals and give out some tips to those trying the sport for the first time and aiming to show off their skills.

The festival is open to anyone with a disability and everyone is encouraged to attend. All equipment will be provided with the festival run by professional, qualified coaches.

Everyone who attends the camp will be directed to their nearest wheelchair tennis session so they can continue playing the game at the level that works for them.

Those who show potential will be chosen to take part in selection camps. From this players will be chosen for the Tennis Foundation’s Performance Selection Squad where players will be invited to attend training camps with world class coaches, as well as receiving support and guidance throughout the year and a grant towards any travel costs.

Lapthorne said: “I am delighted to be attending the Push2Podium festival at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Sunday. It has been a whirlwind few weeks and I’ve had an amazing time in Rio winning two medals. I’m keen to use my success in Rio to inspire the next generation of players and keep Britain at the top of wheelchair tennis. I’m looking forward to meeting all the participants and hopefully spotting some stars of the future.”

Lapthorne will also be returning to Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at the end of the year for the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters, the prestigious year-end Championships, tickets for which are available now.
