Jazzy B who is to headline the Dartford Mela Community Festival on Saturday

Jazzy B is no stranger to the mela scene and it’s his love of bhangra which has helped the music industry shape a new sound for a generation.

Known as the Crown Prince of Bhangra, the 37-year-old will headline the East London Mela Festival in Barking Park, Longbridge Road, on Sunday, July 1.

The Punjabi singer/songwriter has released 13 albums and is regarded to be the man solely responsible for bringing a chic urban style to the folk music of the Punjab.

He says it is that blend of cultural beats and community atmosphere which makes the annual mela a hit.

“I’m really looking forward to performing at the East London Mela, it’s a big success each year and I’m proud to be part of it,” he said speaking from Vancouver, Canada, where he is currently filming.

“It’s important to get communities together and that’s exactly what this does. It’s not just about the Asian community but the whole community. I’m very excited about it.

“This is the type of place you can take the whole family. I’ve done gigs all around the world and they are all different but with the mela it’s about community, family and friends, everyone can go no matter what age. It has a friendly vibe going on and is a great day out.”

Running from noon until 8pm, the event combines top cultural music, food and entertainment and is supported by Archant London, publishers of the Post. About 10,000 people are expected to attend.

Jazzy B, born Jaswinder Singh Bains, will perform alongside a host of UK-based and international stars such as Asad Shan, Zing TV presenter and Bollywood star, and musician Imran Khan on the large concert stage.

Currently in Canada filming for his debut film Best of Luck, Jazzy B said he was not surprised by the massive interest which now surrounds bhangra music.

He said: “It’s always been here, developing and progressing, especially in the Punjabi states. I’m not surprised it’s become more widely known, there is not a style of music where you can find the beats you do in bhangra. If you have not heard live bhangra then the East London Mela is the perfect opportunity.”

Speaking about his debut film, he added: “It’s got a great harmony, with action but quite light-hearted at the same time.”
