500 DAYS OF SUMMER (12A)
"THIS is a story of boy meets girl", begins the narrator of 500 Days of Summer, and with that the film takes off at breakneck speed into a funny, true-to-life and unique dissection of the unruly and unpredictable year-and-a-half of one young man's no-holds-barred love affair.
Tom, the boy, still believes, even in this cynical modern world, in the notion of a transforming, lightning-strikes-once kind of love. Summer, the girl, doesn't. But that doesn't stop Tom from going after her, again and again, like a modern Don Quixote, Suddenly, Tom is in love not just with a lovely, witty, intelligent woman, but with the very idea of Summer, the very idea of a love that still has the power to shock the heart and stop the world.
This quirky love story stars Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
DISTRICT 9 (15)
A SCI-FI drama based on the short film, Alive in Jo'berg (2005), about the tense relationship between a group of aliens who have been living on earth for 30 years and the humans who have been trying to keep them segregated and under their control. The aliens live in a place called District 9 in South Africa in squalid conditions and are now under the supervision of Multi-National United (MNU), a company who are solely interested in exploiting the aliens' superior technology to make money.
But the only way of getting the extra-terrestrial technology to work is by using alien DNA, so when MNU worker Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) becomes infected with a DNA altering disease, giving him alien DNA, he becomes a very desirable commodity.
Realising he is alone and in serious danger, and as relations between the aliens and humans intensify, van der Merwe must enter District 9 to escape.
GAMER is an action-packed thriller set in a near future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online games.
Mind-control technology is widespread, and at the heart of the controversial games is its creator, reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). His latest brainchild, the first-person shooter game "Slayers", allows millions to act out their most savage fantasies online, using real prisoners as avatars with whom they fight to the death.
Kable (300's Gerard Butler) is the cult hero of "Slayers" and controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status.
Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, Kable must survive long enough to escape the game to free his family, regain his identity and to save mankind from Castle's ruthless technology.
