Grime with positive beat

»MOBO Award-winning gospel and grime star Guvna B is back with a showcase of up-and-coming talent on a new compilation album.
Next Ting 140 is a collaborative project that combines some of the UK’s most talented gospel grime emcees.
Chadwell Heath artist Guvna B, whose real name is Isaac Borquaye, has just returned from a European tour with collaborative artists which took him to Belgium, France and Holland.
He said: “It was well received. You have different cultures in different countries but they still jump up and down at the gigs.
“I was quite nervous. I always am whenever I’m performing in front of a new audience. But I like that feeling.
“If I’m too comfortable I’m not stretching myself enough.”
Isaac, 22, of Bennett Road, said the idea for the album was to create grime with a twist.
He said: “Quite a lot of stuff on the tour was about guns and crime, which is cool if that’s what you want to talk about.
“I think it’s better to inspire positive thinking.
“If you say ‘put the gun up’, we will say ‘put the gun down’ or if you say ‘hit back’ we say ‘turn the other cheek’.
“It’s an opportunity to give talented artists exposure as well.”
“Everyone loved the vision. We recorded it in a week. It was really spontaneous.”
Guvna B, who won last year’s MOBO award for best gospel artist, has just finished his studies at the University of Hertfordshire and released a free album to download called Scrapbook at the beginning of the year.
He said there would be more shows in Europe this month before a homecoming gig at the University College London Union in Malet Street in September.
The Next Ting 140 features tracks from past MOBO winners Jahaziel & Victizzle as well as seasoned gospel veterans Dwayne Tryumf & Commission, alongside emerging UK gospel grime talent. The album is produced by gospel collective, Skyboy Records, and is executively produced by Guvna B.
It will be released on August 17. For more information, go to guvnab.ning.com.
