Charlie's War 15

Released: Friday, January 11

THIS is the true story of how a playboy congressman, a renegade CIA agent, and a beautiful Houston socialite joined forces to lead the largest and most successful covert operation in history.

Oscar winners, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Seymour Hoffman team with Academy Award-winning director, Mike Nichols and screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin to bring George Crile's best-selling book to the screen.

Charlie Wilson (Hanks), was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in tubs with strippers and cocaine.

His 'Good Time Charlie' exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a deep sense of patriotism, and an extreme passion for the underdog.

I n the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan - which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians.

Charlie's War shows just how Charlie and his two partners managed to change that situation, and force the Red Army out of Afghanistan.

Dan in Real Life PG

Released: Friday, January 11

DAN BURNS is a widowed father to three girls, aged nine, 14 and 17, and is a newspaper columnist, living unhappily in New Jersey.

The hard-working father still gets depressed at the thought of his dead wife some four years later, until a family trip takes an unexpected but exciting turn.

The trip to stay with relatives sees desperate Dan (Steve Carell), meet and fall in love with a new woman to the surprise of everyone - no more so than his own.

Marie (Juliette Binoche), is the beautiful stranger who fails to explain that she is hurrying off because her boyfriend is calling her.

Amusingly, on his return home it quickly becomes apparent that the woman whom he has just fallen head over heels for is none other than his own brother's girlfriend

Cue funny yet dramatic mayhem as this inconvenient tale throws the typical ups and downs of the standard romantic comedy into the mix as the couple struggle to contain their feelings for one another.

Can they remain platonic friends, or will love find a way to conquer all as it so regularly does?

4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days cert 15

ARRANGING for an illegal abortion in Communist Romania proves a tragic tale for two female students in Bucharest.

In order to deal with an unwelcome situation, which Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), finds herself in following the flatmates night out, they must break a stringent rule of law.

The tale, set in 1987 during the final years of the Nicolae Ceausescu dictatorship, follows the women into the ugly underworld of back-street abortions performed by questionable doctors in seedy hotels.

Grimly thrilling and sometimes beautifully filmed by Romanian writer and director, Christian Mungiu, this was the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Awards, earlier last year.

It has wowed crowds and courted critical acclaim ever since.
