Today marks the start of women's empowerment month, and Barking and Dagenham Council will be celebrating with a range of activites over the next four weeks.

The month aims to highlight the role of women in the borough both past and present, and while recognising their achievements, it will also focus on the inequalities which still exist and how they can be mitigated.

The month kicks off with a sash and poster making workshop at Barking Learning Centre today at 3.30pm, where attendees can learn about the history of Barking and Dagenham’s women by making suffragette sashes.

Every Saturday, ‘Mums can dance too’ will be held at Abbey Leisure Centre from 1-2pm for free, and on March 11 a Mother’s Day afternoon tea will be running at Eastbury Manor House.

There’ll also be a number of workshops on boosting women in business, as well as a chance to join the borough’s new women’s only community choir at the women’s anthem workshop on March 8. Visit the Barking and Dagenham Council website for more information.
