The Nigerian flag was raised outside Barking Town Hall this afternoon to celebrate 56 years since the country’s independence.
Live music, traditional food and speeches also entertained visitors to the Town Square celebrations which were held a day earlier than normal.
The occasion was celebrated with support from the local Nigerian community, some of whom run businesses in the borough.
Speaking earlier, Damilola Olushanu, administrator of the event, said: “We’ve had live music and speeches from the Nigerian high commissioner and council members and the young mayor will be giving a speech as well.”
“There are also a lot of local businesses here advertising their food and drinks.”
