200 employees face uncertain future with closure of Dagenham bus depot

Some 200 employees face an uncertain future as the closure of a bus depot draws nearer.

After announcing its withdrawal from the London bus market on economic grounds, bus operator First Group is in discussions with another operator for the transfer of 200 staff at its depot in Chequers Lane, Dagenham. Staff will continue to work at the depot until October, when it will shut. They will then face redundancy or could be transferred to the new operator.

Already 49 staff from the depot’s Accident Repair and Rail Replacement units have either been made redundant or secured new positions.

A First Group spokesman said: “Our decision is a business-driven one and does not reflect on the effort or individual performance of those working in Dagenham. We would like to thank them for their commitment and loyalty.”
