It’s that time of year again when we stop complaining that it’s not hot enough and start complaining that it’s too hot.

We also spare a thought for those getting their exam results.

It’s always a worrying time. The closest I get to that nervous feeling of anticipation these days is when the car is in for its MOT.

This year has been even harder. Thanks to a certain virus, that has received more than enough publicity, pupils couldn’t get to take the exams.

What has gone in place of the exam system has been a mess.

Someone came up with an algorithm – which, when you remember we haven’t been given a track and trace app that works yet, was ambitious. We have spent years hearing that our phones are tracking us and storing data about us and then we find that the government can’t use these phones to track our data.

This algorithm highlights what is wrong with the class structure in the UK.

It worked out that children from poorer backgrounds shouldn’t be getting good grades.

It’s the computer version of a posh person saying, “This won’t do at all. If poor children get the same results as middle class children then it’s not fair to those parents who spent their hard-inherited money to get an advantage.”

It’s not the algorithm’s fault. It simply worked out that the education system is biased in favour of the middle classes and tried to copy that.

If you have received some results, I hope you got what you want and weren’t affected by the flaws in the system.

If it helps, I can tell you this. I am in my 40s and I don’t know anyone who’s still bothered by their exam results. One day it’ll be OK.
