April was a really important month for the borough.

Firstly, we received news that we have successfully attracted the three world-renowned markets of London - Smithfield, New Spitalfields and Billingsgate - to Barking and Dagenham.

It is not just our location or transport links that helped us win the bid. Until the end of the 19th century, Barking was home to London’s fishing fleet. It is fitting for London’s main fish market to return to its origins which go back more than 1,000 years.

The markets will bring much-needed jobs and training opportunities in butchery, fishmongery and market gardening. There is also an opportunity to provide a significant retail and educational offer alongside the regeneration of the River Roding area.

Earlier in the month, we were treated to the opening of our brand new Youth Zone in Parsloes Park by Prince Harry. It is the first of its kind in London.

Our Youth Zone reflects our huge aspiration for the borough. It will provide a safe place with activities for up to 1,500 young people every week with access to fantastic activities including sports, dance, IT and even rock climbing.

What is remarkable is that we are doing this at a time when other councils are cutting back. Make no mistake, we live in challenging times. In the last 10 years, our own council’s budget has been cut in half. But if we can work with residents and encourage businesses to come forward with funding, we stand a chance of leaving a lasting legacy even in the most trying of times.

All this confirms Barking and Dagenham is on the up.
