More than 50 women gathered at the Excel Women’s Centre in London Road, Barking, to launch a new project focused on women’s health.

Margaret Hodge, who represents the Barking constituency, said: “It’s taken a long time to get this point where we have got British Lottery funding but we have now got somewhere for women in the heart of Barking.

“I think this [cafe] opening here is great. I’m going to be knocking on the door, coming in for a cup of tea.”

Led by the Barking & Dagenham Somali Women’s Association, the women’s wellness cafe will focus on promoting health and tackling isolation among women in the borough.

Managing director Zahra Ibrahim said: “The main focus is to protect health and harmony in the community. Only when we are socially connected can we make a difference.”

After Ms Hodge cut the enormous cake for the cafe opening, guests enjoyed activities including henna, health-checks, jewellery-making and cuisine from around the world.

“I’m really happy with how today went,” added Zahra. “So many people were here, more than I even anticipated.”
