A MAN caught drink-driving put coins in his mouth when asked to take an alcohol breath test, claim police.

Officers pulled over Wesley Plummer after they spotted him driving on the wrong side of Wood Lane at 5.20am on February 5.

When Plummer was asked to provide a sample of breath, the 27-year-old allegedly put coins in his mouth.

Eventually he did take the test and it showed he was more than three times over the drink-drive limit.

The special needs volunteer was arrested and taken to Dagenham Police Station.

At the station he asked if he could go to the toilet before providing a blood sample. Officers say he then urinated in the toilet before kneeling down to drink the dirty water.

At Barking Court last week, Plummer, of Stroad Road, Forest Gate, pleaded guilty to drink-driving but denied putting coins in his mouth and drinking the toilet water.

He told magistrates he had not planned to drive home that night.

He said: "My friend and I went to a nightclub and he was going to drive us home as he hadn't been drinking. But as we left the club these four guys ran after him and started attacking him."

"When he got into the car he had blood on him. I thought he might have been stabbed so decided to drive him to the hospital. Then the police stopped us."

Magistrates sentenced Plummer to 150 hours of unpaid community work, disqualified him from driving for 26 months, and ordered him to pay 70 in court costs.
