POLICE are warning families not to allow strangers into their homes as the number of conmen burglaries has increased dramatically in recent weeks.
There have been 16 thefts in the last month where the victim was duped by scammers claiming they need to use the toilet or phone.
It is only after the person has gone that the victim realises money, jewellery and other items have disappeared.
In some cases the con artist pretends to be from the gas and water boards, or even an engineer from the council.
Barking and Dagenham officers are warning residents not to let these people into your homes.
If the caller is genuine they will have ID and will not be offended if you ask to see it or ask for their office number to call.
Families who have elderly or vulnerable relatives or neighbours should help them stay safe.
Make sure they ask callers to come back at a time when there is a friend or carer at the house.
