LABOUR is due to carry out an executive reshuffle tonight (Wed) as it prepares for the lead-up to the May 2010 elections.

Incoming party leader Cllr Liam Smith is expected to unveil a new team, with executive member for culture, Cllr Bob Little, due to become his deputy, assembly chairman Cllr Rocky Gill to take on the children's portfolio, including education, and newcomer Cllr Phil Waker, set to inherit housing from Cllr Smith.

Outgoing children's portfolio holder Cllr Jeanne Alexander prepares to take over "challenging" safer neighbourhoods and communities from Cllr Val Rush, who is inheriting street scene and sustainability from Cllr Milton McKenzie.

Outgoing leader, Cllr Charles Fairbrass MBE, who was first elected in 1971, is to become mayor for the second time.

Cllr Mick McCarthy will continue to promote regeneration, and Cllr Graham Bramley keeps hold of the resources portfolio, including finance.

Customer services stays with Cllr Shaun Carroll and Cllr Bert Collins keeps the adults portfolio. Other minor changes were due to be unveiled at last night's assembly meeting.

Cllr Smith pledged to act as a "troubleshooter", fixing people's problems and helping residents through the recession.
