Murder squad detectives are holding a 52-year-old man in custody today (Tuesday) after the attack on David Trott in Charlecote Road.
Mr Trott, also 52, was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, on Monday but died shortly after 12.20am today.
A Met police spokesman said this afternoon: "It is believed that a neighbour called police to the ground-floor maisonette after hearing a disturbance. An incident room has been set up at Barking."
A post-mortem was due to be carried out at Queen's Hospital, Romford, today and relatives have been informed.
