West Ham have an exciting new strike partnership

The pair complemented each other well with Obinna prepared to run with the ball and shoot on sight, while Piquionne is always looking to bring others into the game.

It is a partnership that has certainly pleased manager Avram Grant.

“Their attitude is very good,” said the boss. “They work very hard and they are quick and understand the game.”

Nigeria international Obinna is on loan from Inter Milan, and the 23-year-old has already made a good impression, making one goal and scoring the winner at Sunderland.

Meanwhile, Piquionne, 31, who cost the Hammers a bargain 1million from Lyon in the summer, made it two goals in as many games on Saturday.

“Freddie I know from Portsmouth is a team player. He works first for the team and then for himself and he got the reward,” said Grant.

“He scored a very good goal in the middle of the week, and he scored today, he worked hard.

“Obinna is an intelligent player and I told you that part of our vision of the club, and not just because of our financial situation, is to take players who are hungry for success.”

Grant’s current selection means there is no starting place for Carlton Cole.

The 26-year-old has now gone nine games without a goal for the Hammers.
