With two days left of British Pie Week, we've put together a list of the five best-rated pie and mash shops in east London based on recent TripAdvisor reviews (in no particular order). 

1. Maureen's Pie & Mash 

Maureen's Pie & Mash can be found on Market Way in Chrisp Street Market.

This pie and mash shop is family run, with their pies baked by Maureen's son, Jason. In keeping with family, their liquor recipe has been the family's secret for 60 years. 

They have racked up 113 reviews on Tripadvisor and have gained themselves a 5 star rating overall. 

One reviewer visited in January this year and wrote: "What a great experience. Pie & mash with liquor was great, the staff were very friendly as it was our first visit.

"The place was packed all the time we were there. We will definitely be back." 

Another TripAdvisor reviewer from November 2023 said: "Pies to travel miles for! Great pie & mash served by really friendly staff. There is nothing not to love about this establishment."

2. G Kelly Noted Eel and Pie Shop

G Kelly's can be found on Roman Road in the Roman Road Markets and is another example of a family-run east London pie and mash shop. 

Founded in 1939 by George Kelly, the shop has been handed down through generations and is now run by Sue and her son Neil. 

As well as traditional classics, G Kelly also provide vegan pie and mash so have something for everyone. 

They have 58 reviews and have been rated 4.5 out of 5 overall. 

One reviewer who ordered from their delivery service in February says: "Fantastic lunch. Didn’t go to the shop but ordered online. Food was excellent. Good quality ingredients. Excellent value for money."

3. Robins Pie & Mash 

Robins Pie & Mash is located on High Street in Wanstead and is one of six branches. 

They have been serving the East End classic since 1929 across five generations. 

They also provide vegetarian and vegan friendly pie and mash. 

Their Wanstead branch has racked up 58 reviews on TripAdvisor, with an overall rating of 4 out of 5.

One review from Heidi Mollett who visited in February said: "Excellent food as always. What lovely, friendly staff too. I even had a nice surprise after eating my pies and mash…the fella who owns it, I presume, gave me another pie, mash and liquor on the house.

"It’s the only place I use and would definitely recommend for its quality and typical cockney warmth."

4. Barneys Pie & Mash

This pie and mash shop is located on Garnett Way in Walthamstow and has been rated 5 stars overall from 52 reviews. 

Barneys is a little less traditional in terms of its background.

It was set up in 2018 by Tommy Barnard, a former plumber. Tommy taught himself how to make the pies and liquor and the restaurant won the Guardian Series Takeaway of the Year award for 2022. 

Their most recent Tripadvisor review is from six days ago and says: "10/10 pie & mash. Absolutely lovely pie and mash. Food is fresh. Owner is lovely and welcoming. We loved it and will definitely be back! Would 100% recommend!"

Another review from January reads: "Excellent pie and mash that caters for vegetarians (maybe vegan) and well worth the short wait for the pies to cook."

5. Eastenders Pie & Mash

Eastenders Pie & Mash is located in East India Dock Road, Poplar. 

They make their pies fresh, daily and source their meat from nearby Smithfield Meat Market. 

They have been providing east Londoners with pie, mash and liquor since 1976. 

TripAdvisor reviews have given them an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 27 reviews. 

One review from November 2023 wrote: "Perfect pie n' mash. It was the nicest pie n' mash I have had in years."
