The Mayor of London has responded after a man with a sword attacked people in Hainault. 

A critical incident was declared earlier this morning when officers from the Metropolitan Police were dispatched to Thurlow Gardens in response to reports of a car being driven into a home. 

Further reports then came in that people had been attacked - including members of the public and police officers.

Sadiq Khan said he was "absolutely devastated" over the news of the incident that saw two police officers and several members of the public attacked. 

He said: "I remain in constant contact with the Commissioner.

"A man has been arrested and the area secured. The police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

Two police officers are said to have been attacked whilst responding to the major incident. 

New North Road has been closed in both directions and buses 150 and 247 are being diverted via Manford Way, Manor Road and Fencepiece Road as a result.
