Whether that is with vibrant town centres, clean streets and looked after green spaces, or local health services, Barking and Dagenham deserve investment into our local communities.
The previous Conservative government neglected Barking and Dagenham.
Despite funding being cut to the bone, community hubs closing one by one and local high streets filled with closed shops, the council kept Barking and Dagenham afloat by protecting frontline services in the face of austerity.
And I regularly meet amazing local groups who continue to support our local communities.
The Labour government has given Barking and Dagenham council over £174 million over three years in the first multi-year settlement in a decade, meaning more money for the services that mean most to you.
I was glad the government initially invested £1.5 million into Barking Town Centre to revitalise our high street but I knew it was not enough to make a real impact to the everyday lives of people in Barking. So, I started a campaign to get more money for our borough from the government’s Pride in Place fund.
I launched a survey to hear from you about how you would like additional funding to be used in the borough and I’ve met with Ministers to make the case for Barking and Dagenham.
I’m pleased to announce that the government has allocated Barking and Dagenham an additional £40 million, including £20 million for Mayesbrook Park and Rippleside in Barking constituency.
The government are investing an additional £5 billion into communities across the UK as part of the Pride in Place programme.
Extra money won’t bring about change overnight, but it will make a massive difference.
We also need to make sure the money is spent on the priorities of local people.
That's why over the next few months I’ll be setting up a Pride in Place board with an independent local chair.
