Search the Public Notice PortalAfter weeks of some of the hottest days London has ever seen, it is clear that our summers are changing.
Whilst temperatures have cooled down recently, there are still plenty of sunny days ahead.
That’s why it’s great to see that the Mayor is bringing back the Summer Streets programme.
This new funding will go towards creating and improving our outdoor spaces, which will help us all to make the most of the warm weather.
With funding being spread across London, this is intended to help bring more life to our local high streets.
That includes public screenings of Wimbledon and the World Cup, more outdoor dining and community events, all at a time when I know the future of London’s nightlife and hospitality is a real concern for many of you.
Here in Barking and Dagenham, we’ve been given one of the largest portions of funding, with over £100,000 to spend on more outdoor seating areas along Barking Town Centre.

Whether you’re grabbing breakfast, meeting friends for lunch in the sunshine, or heading out for an evening meal, there’ll be more ways to enjoy everything our town centre has to offer.
The investment will also go towards transforming Short Blue Place into a vibrant street food market, complemented by family-friendly activities that will help bring even more life and energy to the area for residents of all ages.
Particularly in Barking, one of the things I’m most proud of is the diversity and welcoming attitude of our community.
Nowhere is that diversity more visible than in our local hospitality scene.
Our cafés and food businesses play a huge role in bringing us together.
Giving these businesses the space and support to thrive not only benefits us residents, but also encourages more visitors, helping the local economy.
This means more jobs to go along with a more vibrant town centre.
As London continues to experience these warmer summers, it is important that we adapt our public spaces for the future.
Creating more welcoming outdoor areas is just one way of making the most of the warmer months, whilst helping local businesses thrive just like many other major European cities.
The summer is already packed with sport and cultural celebrations, so it’s great to see funding that will help our local businesses harness these opportunities.
I for one can’t wait to see these plans come to life.
