A shoe shop in Dagenham is closing down with one staff member claiming it'll shut for good in a few months time.

Shoezone, located at unit 12 in the Heathway Shopping Centre, is plastered with several yellow and black "closing down" signs.

The shop is expected to shut permanently in late January, a member of staff told this paper during a visit yesterday (October 20).

An exact closing date has not yet been confirmed.

The shop sells men's, women's and children's footwear, as well as bags and accessories.

It remains listed as open on both the Shoezone and Heathway Shopping Centre websites.

The closure also comes amid proposals for a major redevelopment of the area around including around 520 new homes and the demolition of the shopping centre.

Whilst an application to formalise the plans is yet to be submitted, Be First - Barking & Dagenham Council’s regeneration company - submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) scoping report for 214 to 234 Heathway on August 24.

If approved, the project could see the shopping centre, Millard Terrace flats and its multi-storey car park demolished.

They could be replaced with up to 520 homes, a tower of up to 25 storeys and at least 1,600 square metres of shops and community space.

The wider proposals have not yet reached the stage of a full planning application and there is currently no indication that the proposed redevelopment is connected to Shoe Zone's closure.
