PICKPOCKETS and purse-snatchers will now face a new weapon as police bring in the 'cat bell.'

Officers from the Abbey ward SNT set up a stall to hand out free cat bells to residents on December 17 (Wednesday) as part of the burglary prevention scheme Operation Secure.

The tinkle of a bell attached to a bag, a purse or a mobile phone will help alert stressed Christmas shoppers to pickpocketers.

Property marking for electrical goods was also on offer.

The team has just completed a round of property marking in which it visited 3,621 homes and offered property marking.

Residents who have missed out can still arrange for officers to call by their address to mark their valuables by calling Abbey SNT on (07747) 790012 or (020) 8721 2786.
