Students and staff at a vocational school in Barking raised about £130 at a sponsored walk for Sport Relief.

About 30 people from Techical Skills Academy set off from Barking Abbey for a mile-long loop around the town centre.

Yesterday’s walk was in aid of The Nation’s Billion Steps Challenge, which aims to record one billion steps per day, every day, for the week of Sport Relief.

“We completed 60,000 steps,” said academy head Hilary Moore, who pushed around a measuring wheel to record the walkers’ distance.

The academy, which is part of Barking and Dagenham College, raised money through donations and people chipping in to take part.

Further funds came from fruit sold at the walk.

“We have raised well over a hundred pounds today and we have sponsorship money to collect and more fruit to sell,” said English lecturer Diana Aynaci, who organised the sponsored walk.
