The borough’s first Community Games kicked off today with a competition involving 650 schoolchildren.

Day one of the event saw 48 teams compete in eight different events at SportHouse and the Mayesbrook Athletics Arena.

There was also a renaming of the arena, which is now to be known as the Jim Peters Stadium, in memory of Dagenham’s famous athletics export who ran the first sub-two hour 20 minute marathon.

Tomorrow the Games continue but are open to families.

The Community Games comes after the council withdrew from the London Youth Games last year.
