WEST HAM Academy's disappointing start to the new campaign continued at the weekend, when they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town.
Tony Carr's under-18s are a very inexperienced side, and though they showed plenty of potential and came so close to getting a grip on the game in Suffolk, it was still not quite enough.
West Ham twice hit the woodwork, but Ipswich grabbed the lead with almost their first attack on 25 minutes through Ronan Murray.
Ipswich goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin was in fine form, making a superb one-on-one save from Christian Montano after he had gone through in the second half.
But moments later, the home side stormed forward, beat the West Ham offside trap and Josh Carson grabbed their second.
West Ham continued to attack and were denied once more by the keeper, but they did earn some consolation in the last minute when Daniel Subuola struck.
They will hope for a better result at home to Southampton on Saturday morning.
West Ham: Mehmet, Modelski, Brown, Lampe, Sanchez, Moncur (Driver 65), Barrett (Smith 70), Wearen (Werndly 65), Subuola, Montano, Abdulla.
