Snow and sleet are expected tomorrow on the coldest day of the winter so far.

Across Barking and Dagenham heavy rain could to turn to heavy sleet or snow in the afternoon.

Passengers are being warned of potential road, rail and air disruption if snow settles, and ice could prove a hazard on the roads.

Snow showers are also expected on Friday, which will remain cold with widespread frosts.

The Met Office has warned residents to brace for a “big change in the weather” after a relatively calm and settled start to the New Year.

Forecaster Steven Keates said: “As we move through the week we are looking at a real blast of winter and the first proper snow, not just to the north but potentially across the south.”

He added that showers on Friday were “more likely to be snow than rain”.
