WE go back to 20 years ago for this week's Days of the Old School Yard.

It features a group of enterprising under-fives, who would now have children of their own....when they raised 623 for their mums and toddlers group at St Mark's Christian Centre, Beckton.

Collecting things in Smartie boxes was one way in which the youngsters helped to keep the East Beckton Under-Fives group going.

Each child collected ten items in one box, and were sponsored on each!

Parents also contributed through commissions received on book sales. Local traders donated prizes for a raffle.

The group, which used to meet in a portable building before the St Mark's Centre was built in Tollgate Road, moved in to their new premises just before this picture.

A committee of parents that run the group will consider further fundraising ideas.

Fifty-six children attended at that time and there were sessions in the morning on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and in the afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
