Barking and Dagenham College sends designer to ‘wow’ fashion week

An ex-Barking and Dagenham College student will join the youngest designers at London Fashion Week on September 22.
Luce Isioma Anumba, 18, is among 19 teenagers to be shortlisted from more than 100 to showcase her designs after showing promise in workshops led by Hackney charity FAD.
Italian Luce, who came to the borough to complete a Level Three BTEC in fashion design, moved to Manchester in July after her course.
But she says she’s looking forward to returning to the capital and hopes her designs will “wow” the audience.
“I really love to create things that not everyone can wear but when people see them they just go: ‘Wow’,” she said. “It’s really exciting to be going to London Fashion Week – this is a really big opportunity for me.
“I love fashion and I’ve always wanted to do it – my mum had four shops in Italy selling clothes and she was a model when she was younger.
“I’d never think about reaching that level at this stage.”
Luce attributed her success, in part, to the college, which got her involved in the FAD scheme.
“I wouldn’t know about it if it weren’t for my tutors,” she said. “The college really helped me.”
Industry experts, including BBC2’s Great British Sewing Bee presenter May Martin, will judge the young designers.
