It’s the recent past, the present and most definitely the future – but how on earth do you get a job in the digital economy?
Fortunately, Barking and Dagenham’s rising technology star Seun Oshinaike – co-founder of Brighter Steppings and creator of the anti-bullying app Silent Secret – is happy to offer some advice.
We asked him to provide five tips on breaking into the digital world of work – and this is what he said.
1) What you can do to prepare for interviews?
It’s important to take advice from others/adults or peers that have been through interviews successfully. Likewise it’s useful to seek advice from peers that might have been through interviews unsuccessfully... there is always something to learn both ways.
It’s important to go through the job description at least the day before the interview and anticipate possible questions that the interviewers are likely to ask.
It’s important to read up on the employer to know as much details about them as much as possible.
2) How can you boost your CV?
One of the best CVs that I’ve ever shortlisted for an interview was full of creativity, it was for a graphic designer job and the CV was of a sketch of a brain, different sections of the brain were linked to the skillset of the interviewee.
It’s important that your CV is simple and creative to stand out amongst the possible hundreds of CVs that an employer will be going through.
3) What jobs are out there?
The usual retail jobs are still out there, you just have to be persistent. Depending on your qualification, there are jobs to apply to online. Don’t be afraid to take or apply to jobs that might not be the ideal job for you, it’s all part of building resilience, until a more fruitful job role come along.
Entrepreneurship online or offline is also an alternative.
4) How do you stand out from other applicants?
Your previous work experience is always a good way to stand out.
5) What can you study, or teach yourself?
Search for free online courses to sign up on. Also YouTube is another great resource to find an area of interest to learn from.
Find a digilab or fablab near you to join and learn something new.
