Barking and Dagenham residents are being encouraged to get involved in the fun of the Olympics by joining a community scheme.

Today marks 175 days until the 2012 games and the London Organising Committee for the Olympics and Paralympics Games (LOCOG) has launched a Local Leaders scheme.

The project will provide the tools needed to create a great celebration, and will also supply residents with planning and events ideas.

Tips will range from hosting sport quizzes, to making a garden or community allotment shine in preparation for the Olympic Torch coming through.

Council leader, Cllr Liam Smith, said: “Becoming a Local Leader will be easy, but the great thing about this scheme and the tool kit does mean that anyone can get involved without it being too difficult or too much of a strain on time.”
