Children across Barking and Dagenham have been given the chance to try out new sports with a week of festivals.

The activity days were organised as part of a partnership between the council and charity Sport Inspired, which aims to encourage youngsters to get fit and active.

Richard Raynes, the charity’s CEO, said: “We work with 10,00 children each year. Of those, 3,000 to 4,000 are here.

“We’ve got a long-running partnership with Barking and Dagenham Council, and we work with every school in the borough.”

He said that throughout the week, as many as 800 eight and nine-year-olds took part in a series of sport festivals, giving them the opportunity to try out different activities that are available locally. Year Nine pupils were on hand as young leaders to support them.

Sport Inspired then aims to provide children who express an interest in the sports, which include dancing, boxing and rugby, with the chance to participate at school.
