Around 500 Barking and Dagenham residents enjoyed a free festive foray to the seaside on Saturday.

Families sung carols, received presents and posed for selfies with St Nick while travelling on the scenic route to Southend.

Father Christmas handed out 300 books during the day-trip, before tucking into a mince pie or two.

The annual event, which has run from Barking station and back for the last four years, was organised by Together4West Children’s Centre Parents Forum.

Organisers said train operator c2c gave free tickets for the journey.

Saima Ashraf, deputy leader of Barking and Dagenham Council and cabinet member for community leadership and engagement, said: “At this festive time of year, people come together to celebrate and spend time with their family and friends.

“It is simple things that make a huge difference and it is absolutely wonderful to see residents enjoying themselves and being able to take advantage of opportunities such as this.”
