Barking and Dagenham is marking the start of the festive season in style – with a 30 ft Christmas tree, real reindeer and a visit from Santa.

On Saturday, December 1, the annual Christmas light switch-on is taking place in Barking town square from 11am.

Santa will be in his grotto until 5pm, and he’ll be bringing his reindeer along as well.

There’ll be an arts, crafts and vintage fair run by Studio 3 Arts, while Mr Incredible, Sofia the Unicorn and Bill Ding from Countryside will be around for meet and greets. Christmas workshops, facepainting and funfair rides will also be available to keep the family entertained.

The lights will be switched on by Paw Patrol at 4.30pm, with live entertainment provided by Elfies on the Shelfie.

Elsewhere in the borough, there’ll be a 30 ft tree outside the civic centre, street light displays in Dagenham Heathway, the High Road in Chadwell Heath, Barking Station and East Street, and a tree display outside the Rivergate Centre.

To pre-book a visit to Santa’s grotto, visit bmacgrotto.eventbrite.co.uk.
