Budding businesses celebrated an “important milestone” with wine, cheese and balloons.

Barking Enterprise Centre’s “grown-up” first birthday last night marked a year since the business centre branched out from the council as a community interest company.

CEO Karen West-Whylie said the first year had gone “really, really well” at the two bases in Cambridge Road and Wakering Road, which offer subsidised workspaces for small businesses as well as meeting spaces and support.

Formerly a council service, BEC now enjoys autonomy over its finances and direction – and is scouting for a third base in the borough.

“We believe demand is there and we can now do more for the best of the community,” added Karen.
