A hospital trust is encouraging people to become ward managers as part of a 10-year development scheme.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) hopes its “apprentice to ward manager” model will secure sustainable nursing in east London.

Kathryn Halford, chief nurse at BHRUT, said the scheme will boost recruitment and retention.

“We have basically mapped out the career development journey for all our aspiring and existing nursing staff,” she said. “Our core belief is that with the right opportunities and support, someone at apprentice level could become an expert practitioner.”

She hopes the “personalised career development pathway” will help staff members plan their future and reach their full potential while working at Romford’s Queens Hospital in Room Walley Way and King George Hospital in Ilford’s Barley Lane.
