A Barking mosque is giving its support to Richard House Children’s Hospice during Ramadan this year.

Al Madina mosque will offer aid to the local hospice by donating £4,000. It will also aim to engage with the Muslim community and recruit volunteers.

Ash Siddique, secretary at the mosque, said it is important for the community to get involved.

He said: “Al Madina mosque is honoured to support Richard House Children’s Hospice in highlighting the excellent work they do and to help them raise funds in order to maintain the great service they provide.

“The Muslim community, specifically local Muslim children, benefit from the services provided by the hospice.”

The Beckton hospice was founded in 2000 and supports more than 300 families across east London.

Services include residential and day clinical care, creative therapy, activity days out and end-of-life care with support for the entire family, according to its website.

Richard House CEO Chris Baker said that 50 per cent of families who use its services are Muslim, and he hopes to raise awareness and support for the cause.

He said: “We are incredibly proud to have the support of Al Madina in this campaign and we look forward to working with them not just during this month of Ramadan, but for many years to come.”

Mr Baker said that Richard House relies heavily on the donations of others, and it needs to raise £3.5 million in funding this year to continue serving the families of east London.

“We know how incredibly generous the local Muslim community are and our hope is that by increasing the awareness of our service, people will see how important Richard House is to the local area for so many families,” he said.

The hospice’s campaign has also garnered help from local businesses, including its long-time supporter, Prestons Accountants.

Mr Siddique added: “Together a small gesture can make a big difference.”
