A pub manager has spoken of her joy after seeing her watering hole listed in the Camra Good Beer Guide for the third year in a row.

Emma Portsmouth, who runs The Barking Dog, in Station Parade, said the listing represents a lot of effort.

“I’m well over the moon,” she said. “When I first took over the pub I wanted to get this, and a lot of people said I never would.

“Staff here work hard to ensure the real ales on offer are kept in first-class condition at all times, and the pub’s inclusion in the guide highlights this.”

The most popular ale she serves is Adnam’s Broadside, and Camra members – who visited regularly to check the beer quality – approved.

“If a licensee serves an excellent pint of real ale, then everything else in the pub, including customer service, food quality and atmosphere, are likely to be of an equally high standard,” a Camra spokesman said.
