A cyclist has found fault with a confusing road sign which he says has been directing cyclists the wrong way – for six years.

Colin Newman, of John Burns Drive, Barking, rides past the cycle network sign near Upney Station most days.

The 53-year-old said it faces north when it should face south – a blunder he first reported to the council in 2009.

“It’s got place names on it so obviously needs to go on the left hand side of the road not the right,” he added.

“It hasn’t confused me because I know my way around but it indicates Ilford and then points south, which is completely the wrong direction.”

He has called for the council to either turn it round or take it down.

A spokesman from the council said: “We would like to thank the Post and the cyclist for bringing this to our attention. We have since arranged for the sign to be corrected today (Tuesday).”
