The opening date for the £14million Abbey Leisure Centre has been announced.

The Post had understood the date to be March 2, but the borough’s third major leisure facility will open on March 16.

And before the opening, potential users are invited to viewings on March 14 and 15.

Cllr Darren Rodwell praised the build, which is expected to offer 70 classes a week and boasts a 140-workstation gym, six lane 25mx12.5m pool and the borough’s first luxury spa.

“This new facility will be of huge benefit to borough residents,” he said. “With the addition of Abbey Leisure Centre I think we probably have some of the best facilities of any London borough.”

And Cllr Maureen Worby, cabinet member for adult social care and health, highlighted the project’s importance in improving the borough’s health.

“Research shows that doing just 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week would make a significant improvement to your health,” she said. “With such a wonderful new centre and such a varied programme of activities, I’m sure this will give many people the motivation they need to make a change and get a bit more active.”
