Youngsters have been awarded certificates and trophies for their commitment to reading.

Mayor Eileen Keller presented children with their awards at a ceremony inside Barking Learning Centre, with Cllr Sade Bright also in attendance alongside proud parents.

“Things like this are good because it encourages young people to read,” Cllr Bright said. “A lot of children like to play computer games so to have an interest in reading is a big deal.

“This library does a lot of work to make sure young people are into reading.”

Anais Amrous, 11, of Uvedale Road, Dagenham was awarded the William Fairchild trophy for reader of the year at last Wednesday’s ceremony in the Town Quay library.

“I’m over the moon, when my mum got the email I was just so excited,” she said.

“Sometimes when I read a book I just can’t stop and it turns into the whole day.”
