A bestselling historical novelist has chosen to preview her new book at the 16th century Eastbury Manor House.

Alison Weir is one of Britain’s biggest selling history writers and her work focuses mainly on the Tudor period, so it is fitting that she will launch the book in the Barking manor house built in the same era.

The new novel, Elizabeth of York, reveals the true story of this key figure in the Wars of the Roses who began her life as a princess, then spent her youth as an illegitimate fugitive and then finally married the first Tudor king and became the mother of King Henry VIII.

Her talk on October 8 is expected to draw history buffs from across the country and the last few tickets can be purchased by calling 020 8227 2946.

Council leader Liam Smith commented: “It is a real feather in our cap that Alison has chosen to profile her new book in a listed Tudor building that is so much a part of the borough’s rich heritage.”

Her visit also coincides with the Barking and Dagenham Reading Festival, running from October 2 to 25.
