There was chaos this afternoon after a burst hot water pipe was reported as a “boiler explosion”.

Two fire engines rushed to Heathway in Dagenham to reports of an explosion in the road at 12.29pm.

But when they arrived the firefighters found the incident had been reported by mistake as the Air Ambulance took a man to hospital with minor burns to one hand.

His injuries were the result of a burst hot water pipe in an apartment complex in nearby Church Elm Lane at about midday.

After the rupture the man ran into Poundland at the Heathway Shopping Centre to treat his injuries with water.

Police and paramedics were called to the shopping centre shortly after, with police also finding no explosion to investigate.
