A crackdown on boy racers could mean them paying up to £1,000 for stunts.

The council imposed a Public Space Protection Order on the borough’s southern areas, including Thames View ward and Goresbrook ward.

Cabinet member for enforcement and community safety Councillor Laila Butt said offenders should stop treating the borough like a race track.

“We have listened to our residents which is why we are showing the red flag to the irresponsible boy racers and petrol heads who are not only jeopardising their own safety but others around them,” she said. “A whole swathe of the borough will be off-limits to these boy racers who think they can use our streets as Silverstone.”

The order prohibits speeding, driving in convoy, racing, stunts, sounding horns to cause a nuisance, revving engines and wheel spins. The order also applies to people who attend race events as spectators.
