A BRAVE young man risked his life to rescue a litter of puppies trapped inside a burning flat.

James Griffiths, of Oldmead House, Dagenham, was across the street at a neighbours' when he received a phone call telling him a fire had broken out near the front door of his flat.

Fearing for the Staffordshire terrier puppies, which he was looking after for his young nephew, he ran to his flat on the sixth floor, and managed to save the puppies and their mother by carrying them through a window.

Neighbour Michelle, with whom the week-old puppies are now temporarily staying, said: "We are all very proud of him. He's a hero."

The fire is believed to have started due to a faulty electrical intake box.
